The latter includes a striking letter addressed by Mr. L. M.. Isitt to the "Southland Daily News" in reply to Mr Masscv, who speaking at Winton, quoted Mr. Isitt on the Government's shortcomings but not on its virtues.

A peculiar case was heard at the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday. A commercial traveller, who was shortly to be married, left £144 with his fiane< c instructing her to put it in the fr'.uings Bank for him. This.she agreed to do and somo months after she drew £58 10s to settle a matter in which she had been concerned in Christchurch. This was without the plaintiff's knowledge, but ho forgave her for it. The othor day, however,, lie called to see her but found that siio had been married that very day, and had left town and had taken the balance of the bank deposit. Hence this action. Recently says a Feilding telegram, the Rev. Hammond, a No-license iecturei speaking at Feilding said that a pictorial advertisement of empty shops, etc., in Masterton was false and misleading, and those responsible for it were liars. Mr. H. McMannaway, president of the Licensed Victuallers' Association challenged tho Rev. Hammond and said ho would give £215 to tho hospital if the matter for advertisement was false. Two adjudicators were appointed to examine tho matter, namely Messrs. W. J. B. Trewin, barrister and ex-Mayor, and H. Mclntyre, M.A., LL.B. The adjudicators found that there was no foundation in the subject of the advertisement, so the Rev. Hammond wins.

It is thought by very many that the result of the general election will be the return to power of the Liberal Government, and an addition to the ranks of the Independent Liberals, whilst the Opposition will be a long way oft' reaching tho Treasury Benches. It is also stated that practically all the members of the Ministry will be returned, and some without a second ballot, tho Hon 11. McKenzie being among the latter. But of course there is always a diversity of opinion on those matters.
