CABLE RATES.
DELAYED PRESS MESSAGES
[Press Association—Copyright.] (Received Nov. 23, 0.25 a.m.) Melbourne, Nov. 22.
In the House of Representatives, in reply to questions, Mr. Fraser stated that he had received a communication from the High Commissioner notifying that the Pacific Cable Board proposed to reduce the rates on Press cables from nine pence to four pence half penny a word provided they were liable to delay not exceeding twelve hours. The Government intended to ■agree to the proposal, and if the Eastern Extension Company was agreeable it would probably come into operation on January Ist.
The Telegraph Department states that the reduction in Press cable rates referred to by the Premier and mentioned in a Christchurch telegram this week applies only to deferred cables, which may be liable to 12 hours' delay. The Department has no further details., and was not aware that there was any intention to apply the deferred system to Press as well as ordinary cables. —Press Association
