PROVISIONAL AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT

A conference representing the Seamen's Union and the Shipowners' Federation which has been sitting iv Wellington during the past few days discussing the seamen's demands for increased wagos, has come to a provisional agreement under which work is to go on for tho present. The men get an advance of 10s per month all round; preference of employment for unionists; and an increase of 3d an hour for overtime rates. After the pending award is made by the Australian Federal Arbitration Court in the dispute in Australia another conference is to bo held in New Zealand with a view to considering tho question of making an adjustment bringing the Australian and New- Zealand rates into line.
