The bulk of the Turkish inhabitants of Mitylene have taken refuge on the mainland, fearing attack by the Italian fleet and Greek reprisals. A similar panic exists in other islands of the Archipelago. The sea in the vicinity of Smyrna ii sown with submarine mines. The Austrian Ambassador inquired of the Grand Vizier whether Turkey was inclined to submit ..to Italy, adding that the latter intended to extend her operations in the Aegean Sea. The Grand Vizier replied that Turkey would fight as long as an Italian soldier remained in Tripoli. She did not fear an action in the Aegean Sea.
