SIR JOSEPH WARD AT BIHMINGHzUL

Sir Joseph Ward and family, Mrs Seddon and family, and other New Zealanders and Australians are- at Birmingham, where Sir Joseph Ward received the Doctor of Laws degree of the University. In response to the students' appeal he received tho Chancellor's permission to speak. After expressing his gratitude Sir Joseph asked on behalf of New Zealand that a message be sent to Mr Joseph Chamberlain on the occasion of his birthday expressing good wishes in recognition of his Imperial work and sympathy with him in his protracted illness. Sir Joseph Ward subsequently visited Mr Chamberlain.
Speaking at tho Chamber of Commerce banquet at Birmingham in the evening Sir Joseph Ward said that it would be better to teach children the history of each colony than that of Greece and Rome. The colonies ought to contribute per capita to the British Navy, which was the colonies' only preservation. Mr McGowen, New South "Wales Premier, speaking before the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, justified and explained New South Wales social legislation. He emphasised tho States' material prosperity and their resources, and said that Australians sought to achieve conditions making for the best physical and mental development and tho highest industrial standard. Hence they were determined to secure a strong and sturdy race. He quoted preferential trade statistics as justifying the conclusion that blood was thicker than water and always told.
