A. McKmjiie, spcond engineer on tho Union Company's Kotuku had one leg taken off by the fouling of an anchor rope off Mnnukau Heads. The accident occurred when the ship was about to cross tho bar. The anchor was being dropped, and the windlass on tho forecastle was not working satisfactorily so McKo/izie proceeded tn make an examination. As the windlass was about to be lot go something went wrong, and the weight of the anchor caused the rope to run out at ji tremendous rate. It twisted round McKenzie's leg and dashed him against the bulwarks with such forco that two stout iron bars snapped. H.ici it not been for tlie promptitude of tlife eliief officer in stopping the windlass McKenaie must have boon thrown overboard. The rope rtractienlly sawed through the flesh and bone leaving the severed limb hanging by a shred of flesh.
