THE DREAD AHEAD.
Now China has a population oi 380,000,000. The mineral resourcesof the country are immense. The land is highly cultivated—and with modem appliances its productivity should be stupendous. The Chinese arei frugal, thrifty, industrious. They live on next to nothing. They possess wonderful skill with their hands, are very adaptable, and soon acquire a knowledge of the various trades and callings. It requircc but little imaginative erfort to conceive what a vast difference the thorough commercialisation oi China will make to the rest of the world. » At the present time England and Germany, the United States and Japan arc, practically at each other's throats on account of the necessity ol territorial expansion. France in Morocco, Bolgium in the Congo, all the various capitalist countries arc prowling around like voracious wolves in search of new markets. One dreads to think what will happen when China —and India, too —aiv completely developed industrially, ami they in their turn require new markets. —Tom Quelch in "Justice."
