Hawera, May 17.

The Egmont winter race meeting commenced to-day, when the weather was fine, and the attendance largo. The sum of £8,531 went through the machines. The results were:— Tongahoe Handicap Hurdles: Euroco 1, Zante 2, White Stone 3. Merry Lawn, Burton, Lanark, Sir Tulloch, and Cannon Shot were scratched. Won easily. Tawhiti Scurry: Gay Lawless 1, Piriwai 2, Smilax 3. Bow Bells, Master Sylvia, Cornelian, St. Arnaud, Watine Kiwatahi, Old Maid, and Draft were scratched. Won by six lengths. Railway Handicap: Sandy Paul 1, Master Sylvia 2, Bonnie Lass 3. Advance was scratched. Won by half a length. Manaia Handicap: Starboard 1, Con the Sliaughran 2, St. Toney 3. True Shot, Meroze, Mulga Bill, and First Mate were scratched. Won by about a length. Ladies' Purse Handicap: Sam 1, Pantetikura 2, Moahau 8. Plum Bob and Maori Rifle were scratched. Won by a length and a half. Telegraph Handicap: Bow Bells 1, Ambonrris 2, Mortite 3. Silver Caluse and Galtrce were scratched. Won by a lonjrth and a half. Waihi Handicap: Gaby 1, Silver Bullet 2, M. SouTt 3. Patrobus, Melaloguc, Jargon. Queensland, and Mariumn were scratched. With regard to the Railway Handicap race, R. Barlow, the rider of Master Sylvia was disqualified for twelve months for alleged pulling.
