THE PITT MEMORIAL.

CHURCH STEPS DESIGN

APPROVED

A deputation representing the subscribers to the Pitt -memorial fund waited on the City Council last night and presented the design for steps on the Church Hill, adopted by the Committee, and asked the Council's approval of it. Mr C. Y. Fell explained the design, and said part of the work, from the third flight of steps, could be left for future effort. The work up to that point would cost £600, and they had £500 in hand. He hoped the Council would be able to assist in making up the deficiency.

Mr Stiles, secretary to the Committee, also addresesd tho Council, after which the deputation withdrew.

Cr Lightband moved and Cr Bislov seconded, that the design be approved.

Cr Turner thought the Council should go further and make up the deficiency. He would like to see tho Council make a contribution, of £150.

Cr Lightband sand he was willincr to accept-the suggestion, but Cr Bisley opposed it. He would prefer that the matter be referred to the incoming Council.

Cr Hampson thought this the best course. He hoped the new Council would be able to find funds to complete tho whole work.

Cr Turner moved as an amendment that the Council make a contribution of £150.

Cr Grace seconded the amendment pro forma. He thought it would be better to leave tho matter to tho incoming Council. The Mayor ruled the amendment out of order.

The resolution was carried.

Cr Grace then moved that it he a recommendation to the incoming Council to assist the Memorial Committee to carry out the whole work.

This was seconded by Cr Neale and carried unanimously.
