SUTER ART SOCIETY.

EXHIBITION OF PICTURES

(From "The Colonist," April 29.) The exhibition of pictures held under the auspices of the Suter Art Society was opened in the Suter Art Gallery yesterday afternoon. To the untiring zeal of a few enthusiasts we arc indebted for the very fine and extensive collection of pictures that will adorn the walls of the gallery till the end of next week, and we trust that the public will do their part by bestowing such liberality of patronage as will encourage the Society in its labour of lover-promoting a more general appreciation of fine art and the acquisition of new pictures for the permanent collection. By an unfortunate circumstance several cases of pictures from Christchurch were detained at Wellington and will not reach Nelson until this morning. These include some of the most noteworthy pictures that will be comprised in the collection and they will be hung before the hour of opening in the afternoon. Without the Christchurch collection there are over two hundred exhibits catalogued, and among the exhibitors are a number of distinguished artists. Time has not permitted a thorough inspection of the pictures, but we have seen sufficient to heartily commend the exhibition to our readers.

The attendance yesterday afternoon was satisfactory, and last evening considering the many counter attractions it was good. Miss Stevens kindly arranged a programme, of music for the evening, and this was very much enjoyed by those present. Miss Z. Bisley and Miss Stevens gave pianoforte solos, Miss L. Lucas and Mr T. Houlker were the ■vocal soloists, and part songs were contributed by Messrs Taylor (2), Glover and Booth.

May 1, On Saturday the pictures from tho ! Christen urch exhibition came to hand and were- hung in time for the afternoon visitors to view. These pictures include some of tho most striking in the whole exhibition, noteworthy a large canvas from the brush of Mr. ft. E. Butler, entitled "A Morning Gal-j loo." This depicts a jxmng mother ' with two of her children disporting : themselves on grassy uplands. "Horses" is the game with the mother holding th© reins. The artist has been happy alike in subject and treatment, the spirit of the scene seizing the spectator.
