Great interest was manifested in the local elections yesterday, and tho candidates for the various offices to be filled, and their supporters, wore busily engaged up to the hour the booths closed. The result of the Mayoral election was declared about 8 o'clock, Mr Field being returned by a majority of .184 votes over Mr Pettit. The counting of tho papers in the City Council flection proved a protracted operation, the result not being declared until 2 o'clock this morning.' A crowd of some hundreds assembled in front-of the Municipal Chambers, and heartily received both the Mayoral candidates. There was still a large number opposite the building when the half holiday poll was declared at 11.15 p.m.; but only a few awaited the declaration of the Council election. In the latter the successful, candidates wore returned in the following order:—Messrs Harley, 1655; Mercer, 1350; Hampson, 1306; Snodgrass, 1306; Fell, 1275; Bisley, 1206; Kerahaw, 1200; Tasker, 1175; Adams, 1140. The unsuccessful candidates were: Messrs Bishop, 1125; McConchie, 1036; Turner, 1011; Harrison, 986; Martin, 455; Taylor, 396. Hie details of the polling were as follows:—

The result of the City Council election was declared at 2 a.m. as follows:—

1. For. —Were voters in favour of observing the statutory closing day for factories on the same day as that appointed for shops. 2. Against.—Were voters against observing the statutory closing day for factories on the same day as that appointed for shops. The Saturday half-holiday ioi factories was thus retained by a majority of 12 votes.
