The Nelson province possesses one of the qklest and most remarkable evangelists in New Zealand in Mr. Lewis, of Belgrove, who, although in his eightieth year, preaches two or three times a week, and always without notes. He often walks as many as fifteen miles to a mission service. A Press Association message from Pahiatua states that efforts are being made to induce Mi1. J. C. Cooper to stand as the Opposition candidate for the Pahiatua scat at the general election. A press message from Hawera .states that on Saturday moriiing t?ie Hon. Thomas Mackenzie laid the foundation stone of the new Kaupokonui cheese factory, and in the afternoon he laid the foundation stone of the new, post office to be built at Manaia. Large crowds were present at the functions^ A Sydney cable states that Mr. Atack, of Wellington, is a passenger for New Zealand by the Ulimaroa, which sailed yesterday* At Greymouth a handsome presentation was made to Mr. Tom Pollard on Wednesday night in recognition of his •33rd birthday. Praise was accorded his generosity in assisting many good causes by giving benefit performances. Mr. Henry Holmes, the well-known Wairarapa settler and owner of the Matahiwi Estate, while deer-stalking at Martinborough early last week, was seized with illness. He was attended by medical men, but passed away at a lata hour on Thursday night. Deceased was between 50 and 60 years of age, and was highly respected. On Saturday afternoon, after the conclusion of the bowling match on the Maitai green, Mr. Chas. Lamb was made the recipient of a dressing case by the members of the Maitai Bowling Club, through the president (Mr. W. Hockey). In making the presentation, Mr. Hockey referred to the ready assistance Mr. Lamb had always given the club, and the members wished him success and prosperity in his new home (Wanganui). Mr. Stiles (Nelson Club) expressed similar feelings on behalf of the members of that c'.ub. Hearty cheers were accorded the recipient, who said the happiest years of his life had been spent in Nelson. Among the bowlers of both clubs he had made many friends to whom ho regretted to have to say "good-bye." He thanked the Maitai Club for their presentation, and the kind expression of feeling and good wishes made by the speakers. Mr. Lamb leaves for Wanganui to-morrow, having purchased a business there. Mr A. Leaver, formerly of Nelson, was re-elected a Councillor at Westport last week. The "Westport News" in giving brief biographical sketches of the different candidates, says:— "Cr. Leaver, who headed Wednesday's poll, is a native of Nelson, educated in the local school and puting on the finishing touches at Wanganui High School. Like the majority of us, he has vivid'recollections of how things were done in the place of his boyhood and early manhood, and looking for a model, very often falls back on his native city to supply it. After serving an apprenticeship at the saddlery in Nelson ho came to Westport as manager and subsequently bought out the business, which ho has continued to conduct %vor since. Cr. Leaver has found time to take a keen interest in various local affairs such as the Kawatiri Rowing Club the Fire Brigade and other bodies. A keen lover of sport, at one time holding the cycling championship of Nelson, in 1895-96, he has always been ready to lend a helping hand. This is his second term of office as councillor, and it says something for the appreciation of his work and his straightforwardness that lie should have been returned at the head of the poll."
