ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ON MONDAY NEXT

On Monday next the annual election of school committees will take place. In the Nelson education district it lias been arranged that the meetings of hou.scholdei's shall !>o held in the principal school in each school district, except in Nelson, whore the meeting will be held in the Pro\incial Hall, at Hope in the Ran/.au school, and at Collingwood in the Institute. AJi meetings are advertised to commence at 8 p.m. "Householder" in relation to the election of members of a school committee means-—(a) every adult, male or female, person who has for the period of three months next before the day of election resided in any dwellinghouse within the school district as oivnor or tenant thereof; and (b) if not qualified as above, includes the father, wherever resident, or, if he is. doiid or absent from New Zealand, the guardian or other person, wherever resident, who has the actual custody of any child attending any State school situated within such district; and (c) in school districts situated within a mining district means very holder of a miner's right who for a period of three months before the day of election has resided in the district and is not an alien. A misapprehension appears to exist in several quarters that householders must have their names upon an electoral roll to l>e entitled to vote at an election of a school committee. Such is not the cuse. If a person is a householder, qualified as above, whether his or her name is on an electoral roll or not, he or she is entitled to vote at the election of a school committee. In view of the fact that school committees are entrusted with the management of educational matters within school districts, it behoves all interested in the welfare of the young to exercise their i rights of householders and citizens in electing representative committees, j and it is to be hoped that the meetings on Monday next will be well attended.
