SUPPLYING DRINK TO HALFCASTES.

At the Te Ruiti Magistrate's Court to-day; before Mr. Loughnan, S.M., A Hyde,-To Awamutu, was charged with supplying George Wilkinson, Hangatiki a half caaie, with liquor. Defendant pleaded guilty, but said he was unaware that Wilkinson was a half caste. A letter written by him— well and grammaticaL'.y written—and signed. "Wilkinson. 1 'said that he did not linow he was breaking the law. The Magistrate held.that Wilkinson was more guilty than the defendant, but directed no prosecution, because evidence given on oath jji future would deal with half castes ordering liquor, i The- brewers should make, enquiriesi .respecting orders coming from the King Country, and ascertain if from half; castes. The offence was serious, but the first of the kind. Defendant was fined £5 and 2ls costs. Messrs. Hatrick and Co., Waitara, on. two charges of sending liquor into the King Country without advising the Clerk of.the Court of the quantity and .the,.destination, were fined £5 on each charge, and oosta 7a. A. Kerr, hotelkeeper, Waitara, for the samo' offence was fined £1 and 7s costs.
