AN ALLEGED ADVENTURESS.

THE DOINGS OF A HALF-CASTE

WOMAN.

[United Press Association.]

Taihape, March 16. A sensation was created here yesterday, when a half-caste woman who had posed as the possessor of untold wealth, was arrested after being identified as Martha Tainui, an habitual criminal released in October last on license. The woman has very insinuating manners, and completely dazzled local tradesmen and others with her alleged wealth. She claimed to be the daughter of Colonel McDonald, presumably meaning Colonel McDonnell. She was driven about by land agents, and entertained by them and others, and talked of giving largo benefactions to public objects in town. When searched, th e police found that she possessed a penny. She was charged with false pretences this morning and remanded till to-morrow.
