A SETTLER'S LOSS.
DESTRUCTION OF STACKS.
(From "Thff Colonist," lob. lo.) A fire broke out in a groupo* H-ks it Mr Geo. Rues' farm, Boarc oft "Ivaimea West, yesterday afternoon Mr Kuss was m town at Sio £ th* outbreak was noticed by M the family. The aßß«ten«e^ r .<>Mibours was procured and latci ihe°Richmond Fire Brigade arrived, having come from three to four miles. 'there was' a plentiful supply ol water in the creek near at hand, and the brigade kept down the flames sumciontly to enable the many helpers to pull down tlie stacks and cart the sheaves into the fields, the burning sheaves being stamped out. In this way- a good deal of grain has been saved, but the quality must • suffer. Either two or three stacks of barley and a stack of oaten sheaves were on fire, as well as straw stacks, but the latter wero_allowed to go, eiforts being concentrated upon saving the grain. The workers were employed till a late hour last night, but despite their efforts Mr Russ will be a very horJ/y loser, for we understand that he was not insured. The cause of the outbreak is a mystery, as particular care has been*exercised to avert anything of the sort, and a wax vesto has not been used at the henestead for years.
