NELSON JOCKEY CLUB.

ANNUAL RACE MEETING.

(From "The Colonist," Mar. 2.)

Splendid weather prevailed for the opening day of the Ne'.son Jockey Club's annual race, meeting, which took place at Richmond Park yesterday, and there was a.'large attendance of spectators, including a greater number of ladies than usual. Speculation was brisk, £4009 being put through, '* tho totalisator as agaiast£2s7B for tho first day of last year's meeting. Although with the exception of the trots the fields were not large, the racing proved- most interesting, and there were somo capital finishes.and somo .surprises. In the trotting events tho number of starters was exceptionally large, and twir-iity-two in the- two mile constituted a record. Several improvements were made by the committee, which were, much appreciated by the public, among them being a "bird cage" in whioh the horses paraded before each race, and the posting of the name of the jockey underneath' the number of the hortfc? he was to ride. The events ware got off punctually to time, and tho stewards and officers carried out their duties in a satisfactory manner. After the? mile and a half trot the stewards were called together to coneider the action- of the rider of Storm Cloud in starting before his time, and tho horse, which passed the post first, was disqualified. The Citizens' Band was in attendan^ri, and played a niumiber of selections which were miiic-h appreciated. The trains suited admirably. About 500 travelled by rail and the races were over in sufficient time to allow every one to witness the last race, and return to town in good time. Finola was .scratched and Ahuapai having won a race exceeding £25 in value at Feilding, was ineligible. Glenrock and Long Tom caused some delay at tho post, but a good start was effected. Glenrock was tho first to show out, with Beacon and Amiss in clo^e attendance. At the sea Beacon drew on level terms, and entering the straight went to the front. Astonishment then came with a strong run, but Beacon stalled off the challenge and won by less than half a length, with plenty in hand. Rose Herald finished last. In the 11 Miles Trot, Storm Cloud lad all the" way and passed the post first, Tom Tit and Off Chance being next in order. Stella Leigh finished fourth and King Teddy fifth. Tho Starter reported that the rider,s, of Storm Cloud had beaten the clock by four seconds, and had refused to come back when called upon,- and at a meeting of the stewards Storm Cloud was disqualified, and Off Chance awarded second money. Storm Cloud's time was 4mins 13secs. The three acceptors in tha Nelson Jockey Club Handicap were despatched together. Strathmoira and Mediterranean raced neck and neck, with Lawn Rose well to tho rear, until the straight was reached, when last year's Clip winner overhauled the leaders, and a fine finish ensued, Lawn. Rose displacing Mediterranean for'second place, and finishing a long neck behind Strathmoira. Beacon was the only withdrawal from the Hope Hack Handicap. Negative —who was made a hot favouritebolted twice before a start was effected. Negative was the first to show out, with Pure Rose and Curious Rose next in order. Entering the straight Negative was still in command, and Curious Rose ran into second place, finishing a length behind Negative. Twenty-two horses started in the Handicap Trot, two .miles. AVairau, on the limit, led all the way, and won by less than a length. In the straight Molly Brae put in a strong challenge, and passed AVairau, but the latter, after a good straggle, won by the margin stated above. Ding Dong passed the others in good style, but breaking at the sea bend, lost his chance of getting up. In the Telegraph Handicap, Finola got tho best of the start, and with Balmy Breeze in close attendance led to the straight. Then Rurik made a fi.no run, and won comfortably, tho same distance between Finola and Balmy Brecee. All the acceptors faced tho starter in the Grand Stand Handicap, Merchantman and Strathmoira being the most fancied in the field of five. From a good start Merchantman was the first to show out, with Strathmoira. next. At the, sea the Cup winner (who was not penalised for his win) died away, and the field was bunched together. Merchantman was the first in the straight, and at the distance post Astonishment came with a great rush and caught the jml go's eye a long head in front of Merchantman. Surmount finished last. There were five defections in the AVeltor Hack Handicap, leaving four runners, of which AVhitestone was most fancied. The favourite was in front until the sea. bend, when Pure Rose took command, with Mediterranean close up. The Takaka horse, however, had plenty in hand, and won comfortablj'/ AVhitestone finished last. THE SECOND DAY. (To "The Colonist," March 3.) The weather'conditions were again perfect yesterday for tlie concluding day's races of the Nelson Jockey Club's annual meeting, and the attendance of spectators was larger than usual for a second day. The totalisator investments amountir! to £3596, an increase of £1069 on the total for the second day last year, the total for the meeting being £7605 as against £5105 last year. The racing ytsterdav was again interesting, and Mr Ulic Shannon who handicapped for Mr J. E. Henrys, gave punters a difficult task. The AVaimea Handicap was robbed of interest owing to Merchantman boing left at the post, and there was some doubt in the minds of thr;' public as to whether a start had been effected at all until the starter explained the circumstances to the stewards and reported that the race was started. The stewards held a.n enquiry into the running of R?neo Clair and Ben F in the mile and a half trot, but no action was taken. Apart from these incidents everything passed off satisfactorily, and the- meeting may be considered to be one of the-most successful held by the Club in recent years. The results were :— ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP. Of £35; second £5 from the stake. four furlongs. AA:, It. Simpson's br m Balmy Breeze (Hotchkiss-Sea Breeze) syrs (G. Musson), Bst olbs ... 1 H. Long Tom again caused delay at the post, and the. field was eventually despatched without him. Ahaupai "was the first to show out, with Balmy Breeze, Glenrock and l<enola next in order. Entering the straight Balmy Breeze took command, and won with*plenty in hand, Finola, who was a warm favourite, finished a length behind Ahaupai. Amiss was last all tlie way. Doyle on the limit mark led throughout. At the sea bend before the home stretch was reached Folly and Tom Tit were fighting neck and neck for second place, with Ding Dong coining up rapidly. Just before entering the straight Folly broke, and Tom Tit went up, but "the pony broke and positions were again reversed. • In the straight Ding Dong ran into second place, but was unable to overtake the leader. Tom Tit was fourth and Waikino fifth. ~ In the Richmond Park Handicap all the acceptors faced the barrier. After several false starts Surmount got away with a big break an the rest of -the field, and was lengths ahead until the straight was reached, when tlie held closed up. Pure Rose was second until the; homo turn, when Lawn Hose and Mediterranean came with a rush but failed to catch the- leader, btrathmoira was last. . Nine of the eleven acceptors faced the starter in the Stoke Hack Handicap After some delay at the post the horses, with the exception or Long Tom, were got away well together. Lon"- Tom again caused trouble, at tlie post, and did not give his hackers a run for their money, the jockey being dismounted when the field was despatched. Glenrock was smartly away and was a full longth m front until the sea bend, when Ahaupai took command. Coming into the straight Beacon and Rurik came with a great rush and the others fell away, Beacon viniiin" comfortably, with the favourto a length and a half away second. , Ocean Bitd followed the field all the Mine, on the limit, made the. runniiK' for the first half mile m the Handicap Trot, 2 miles,. but was soon overtaken by Kcnee Clair and Ben X The last named pair fought out a goo finish, both being under the whip.. An enquiry was held by the, stewards into te 1 running of the first and second horses, but the explanations oi the rider and driver wore considered satis-f-ictorv and no action was taken. 1 to boldfaced the starter in the Wain.ea Handican. *J<s™ and Astonishment got away, togetl« Merchantman boing left at tlie po.,t.
