According to the, returns of tho Magistrate's Court for tho year end- . ing 31st December last there was a .slight increase in the number of eases of "drunkenness last year (ten o'clock closing) as compared with 1908 (with tfleven o'clock extension), the figures being 83 and 79 respectively. During 1909 (half of whicli was ten o'clock closing), the number of cases drunkenness was 57. In 1909, 074 criminal cases were heard, 21 being dismissed on their merits, and 19if convictions being obtained. Last Year there was a big falling oft m criminal cases limrd, tho total being 300 with 21 dismissed on their merits, while 140 convictions were recorded. , In 1910 £4402 was sued for, £2160 be- \ iixa recovered, as against £4713 sued for in 1009, £2015 being recovered.
