SALVATION ARMY.
ANNIVERSARY MEETING
(From "The Colonist," Feb. 16.)
Yesterday was a ml letter day in the .history of the Kelson corps of Salvationists. The 27th anniversary was celebrated by a tea hi the Rechabites' Hall, in which nearly 400 people participated. Thore were ojght tables, all beautifully decorated with flowers, and laden with many delicacies. One of these tables was given by members of the Nelson Orange Lodge, who are strongly in sympathy with \h& corps. Other tables wengiven by past officers, the married women, the single women, the Sunday school, etc. There were three sittings down, and as Brigadier Albiston remarked at the after meeting, the Salvationists and their friends had "a right royal time." The after meeting was held in the barracks -under the presidency of the Brigadier. Ensign Bladin prefaced the proceedings with a short statement. Having congratulated his coimades and friends on the success of the. anniversary gathering, he said that the proceeds of the tea would be reserved as the nucleus of a fund for the erection of a barracks, for they desired to have a suitable building of their own. The chairman congratulated the corps on their success, and spoke of the general progress of the Salvation Army. In «■/- ---ery part of the world it was marching on. He spoke in high terms of praise of Ensign and Mrs Bladin, who had don i a noble work in Nelson. Congratulatory letters were read from past officers, including Captain Whitchurch ("who established the Salvation Army in Nelson), and from the ministers of the city. _ A musical programme was very creditably rendered by the band during the evening, and an excellent address was delivered by the Mayor (Mi' Petti t) and the Revs. Mr Crump and Mr MacKenzie. The songsters also entertained the audience. It was announced that Lieutenant Sawyer had been prom ted to the rank of captain. Badges were presented to the local officers. Ensign Bladin cordially thanked all the friends who bad contributed to the success of the anniversary We understand that the- local officers are hopeful that some kind friends will make the Army a present of a site for the proposed new barracks. Our representative asked the Ensi.<m how much land they wanted, and bis reply war, "Forty feet by on.? hundred— that would ho grand." We have no doubt they will get the land, and that the new barracks will go up very soon.
