ACTION BY THR WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL.
(To "'Hie Colonist," March 3.) The question of the- closing of the ■Maitai came up for discussion at the Wnimea County Council meeting yeslerclav, whom tho Engineer (Mr. J. G. iittlejohn) reported that Mrs Richardson had wceted a fence on the road, notwithstanding the refusal of the Council to grant permission.. He rtaff'd that the whole of the road from Sunday Hole to Sharland's bad been fenced. There was a strong feeling among councillors that su,oh action should iiofc ,
be permitted, and it was suggested that the fence sho'iild be removed.
■ The Chairman, said, the was not ;u favour of forcing.th© rama/al if tho fence. Having been erected "ii the Council'& property it became the Council's property, and ';vould be an edvantage so long as arrangements verc mada to enable the public to Luve access to the river . .
Cr. HcU'.t thought the matter should be kift in the hands of the Chairman and Engineer to have such portions of the fence* removed as they deemed necessary, and leave. Mrs. Richardeon to take action against the Coiuicil if she, those. Tho Council should assert its rights. Cr. Maomahon thought proceedings should be, taken against Mrs. Richardson for obstruction. Crs. Drummond and Alborough agreed that tho. Council should take action, the latter remarking that the fence would be an advantage if access to the river were prodded for the public Eventually it was resolved on tnc motion of Cr. Hewetson, seconded by Cr. Macmahon, that the Council's legal advisers should be consulted in rogard to action being taken. .
