In tlie House of Lords Lord Ampthill initiated a debate on the Caiind-, ian-Amerienii reciprocity treaty. Me strongly criticised the inaction ot Mr Brycm, the British Ambassador at Washington, and th:- Government in the matter. This inaction had forced Canada to abandon her national policy. A commercial union of Ciuiada and the United States must lead to a political union. Lord Morlcy declared that the most responsible inun in Canada and the United States laughed at the idea of so-called political annexation. It :it some remote day political events happened th-y would not be the. result ot reeiprocitv, but of general causes Lord Middlnon paid a tribute to .Mr Bryce. who bad gained Canada's confidence but the imreement was an Imperial disaster.
