WRECK OF THE NEW GUINEA.
THE BOATSWAIN'S STATEMENT. [Pkess Association—Copyright.] Sydney, Feb 15. The steamer New Guinea lias slipped back from the rocks, and only the bridgo is now visible. The owners are advised that the vosesl is a total wreck. The boats with the shipwrecked men had a. rough time after leaving the steamer owing to the* strong wind and opposing currents. One boat gave up and returned. The others wore driven 12 miles to sea and drifted about for hours before they were, able to make land. Some suffered severely from their heavy exertions, the rough sea, and exposure. The boatswain of the New Guinea, when interviewed, stated that at the time of the mishap the New Guinea was racing the- steamer Barwon, which was following, and they ran into a thick fog. Suddenly the- noticed th« land right ahead. The order "full speed astern" was giveiv, but before the vessel had time to lose way she ran oil the rocks.
