IMPERIAL PREFERENCE.
THE SOUTH AFRICAN VIEW. INCREASED NAVAL SUBSIDY PREFERRED. [Press Association —Copybight.] (Received Fob 15, 9.50 p.m.) London, Feb 15. Several South African politicians favour the Union contributing to the Imperial Navy an amount equivalent to a certain percentage! on goods imparted into South Africa, in lieu of preference. Despits the official declaration, the newspapers generally believo that a proposal to substitute xi defence contribution for preference will be discussed at the Imperial Gonfercmce. The "Westminster Gazette" states that if the British Treasury got an equivalent sum the Empire, instead of special manufacturers, would bonefit. "The Times' " Capetown correspondent declares that it is true a substitution will be discussed, but it is deemed expedient to omit preference from the agenda. There is a growing feeling among the leaders of both sides that unless there are reciprocal concessions preference is not likely to be permanent.
