The inquiry into the stranding of tho steamer Eastern at Salamander Point has commenced.
'Ihe pilot, Maxwell, stated that the fault was his in attempting to pilot tho vessel when unable- to see the buoys. Ho admitted that the captain advised waiting until a. rain squall had cleared, and he should havo done so. He denied the second mate's evidence contending that ho (the mate) had reported passing the red buoy. The inquiry was adjourned.
