AN ASSAULT CASE.
Wellington, Fob 7. At the Supremo Court to-day, before !Mr Justice Chapman, Henry Joseph Clements, a young man, was charged on three counts, (1) assault with inte.nt to cause bodily harm ; (2) assault that did pause) bodily harm; (3) assault on Vance Clifford Hickok on January 14th. The case for the Crown was that Hickok had escorted home a woman living apart from her husband, When thtt latter reached the back of the house she was met !>•-. tha accused, who had previously kept company with her and paid her board. Ho made, an offensive lomark, receiving a slap on the face,' and returning the. blow with a boot he was carrying. Hickok demanded an apology, which was received with filthy language.' Hickok tried to stop him by putting his hand over his mouth, and was struck with a bottle of beer several times. Tlu« defence was that Hickok struck accused twice, and the bottle of beer was thrown in self defence. Tho jury found accused guilty of common assault under extiome provocation from Hickok. Sentenco was deferred till to-morrow.
