NELSON PROVINCIAL SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

The annual mooting of this Society was held at the Oddfellows' Hall last evening. Chief Barrowman presided, and there was a fair attendance of members.

'Jlio lion, secretary (Mr S. Tyson) submitted the report .and balance sheet. The report stated that the Cmuieil had met on 28 occasions, ami during the. year several functions had been held] tho most prominent being the Hallow 'Eon gathering, the fancy dress and poster ball, the New Year picnic (the latter hold in the Maitai by kind permission of Mrs Richardson) 'and Burns' anniversary gathering on the 25th January, the latter being undoubtedly the best of the series. The thanks of the Society were due Mr Allan, of Drumclog, and Miss Urquhart, who came •from Blenheim specially for that occasion. It was also pointed out that members should take a live interest in tha Society if the national traditions and customs of Scotland were to bt kept alive. The balance sheet showed the Society to be in a fairly flourishing condition financially, with assets valued at over £100. The report and balance sheet were diilv approved. Officers wero elected as follows :— Chief, Mr W. J. Smith. Chieftains, Messrs T. Ilobb, A. McLean, J. A. Stringer, and P. Harris. Council. Messrs W. Moves, G. Campbell, J. Barrowman, T.'Guthrie, G. Jamison, and W. J. Moffatt. Hon. secretary, Mr S. Tyson (re-elected); treasurer, Mr W. J. Smith (re-elected); auditors, Messrs 1). N. Hood and F. W. Hamilton. Mr Barrowm.in, who bad held the office of Chief for two years, declined nomination, as he believed in the office passing on, and lie wished to &«* a younger man elected. A strong committee of ladies was elected as a social committee, power being given to add to the numbnr. Votes of thanks were passed to the Marlborough visitors who assisted at the Burns' anniversary; to Mackie and Co., Scotland, for viands, etc., sent through Messrs J. H. Cock ami Co; and the retiring officers.

Various matters for the welfare of the Sceietv wore discussed, and members can Inok forward to a -successful year's working.
