THE PACIFIC CABLE.

INCREASED EFFICIENCY

[Press Association—Copybiqht.]

(Received Jan 25, 10.50 p.m.) Sydney, Jan 25,

Mr Milward, manager for the Pacific Cable Board in the Pacific, has returned from a visit to Canada. Ho says the Board now controls the line of communication from Australia to Montreal and has effected an installation which will enable the despatch of cables be expedited by 25 per cent. In other words, the line will be able to deal with_ 25 per cent more business in a given timoj. Mr Milward's mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board the line previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Company's telegraphs. Tho Board can now carry messages over 6100 miles with only one land line. Under the old system three handlings woro required.

Asked if the innovation was likoly to lead to a reduction of rates within a reasonable time, Mr Milward said, "It places us iji a better position in regard to reduced cost. The present weekly average of the Pacific line is 42,000 words, and this has shown a marked and continuous increase. It is conceivable that if the Board increased the carrying capacity of tho cable to o. large extent and the public supplied sufficient business, the- rates may be affected.

Referring to the All Red route, Mr Milward declared that obviously it would be inn advantage to have a cable right through, as tho Atlantic cables at the present time wero practically controlled by American capitalists.
