NELSON TOWN SCHOOLS COMMITTEES

The monthly meeting of the abovenamed Committee "was held last night, when -there were present Messrs McConChie, Savage, Johnston, Vercoe, Bray, and the -Rev. J. P. Kemi> thorne. An apology was received for the absence 'ofV the Chairman, (the Rev. J. H. MaoKeaizie). The Ray. J. P. Kempthorne was voted to the chair. The school reports showed.' the tendance to be as follows : — Boys' division, on theroll, 549, average attendance 511.8, percentage 92.5. The girls' division, on the. roll 648 S average attendance', 591.83, percentage 92. It was Teisolred. to ask. : the Board to •enlarge the dustbin at th© Tasman street school, aaid:tot remove same ?to a less: conspicuous position. (Mr John-. Re Mr P; Thompson's complaint tha-t his child was receiving retigious instruction at the Nelson City State sohools, the Board wrote, and asked if the Committee used the expression, "under the Act" so as .to convey to the minds of the members of the; Board that no religious /instruction; whatever is being given- in any of the city State schools during the recognis T ed daily school .hours. It was resolved on the. motion of Mr Vercoej. seconded by Mr. Savage, to send the following reply to the Board's question: "That in re the meaning of a former answer to "the Board in rogard to religious teaching, the Committee beg to say that according to the regulations a^.time tab'e, is posted in each' room of each -school, settii'.g forth the public, school hours," and tho subjects. taught during the same. •No religious lesson is among those subjects. By the Act the Committee has the right to grant the use Of school buildings, when not being .used for public school purposes. The Committee has granted such..use to certain religious teachers, but the working of the classes conducted by such teach*\re' outside the public school hours, is not under the direction of either the Board or the.
