- (Received May 30, 11.30 p.m.) Ottawa, May 30. Friday will be observed as a bank holiday in Canada, but there will be no celebration in view of King George's wishes. (Received May 30, 9.30 p.m.) Sydney, May 30. The Government, finding that the law makes no provision for cancelling the holiday, the King's Birthday will be'observcd as a holiday.
Mr Cullan, Collector of Customs, has been advised from headquarters that the King's birthday must be observed as a holiday by the Drpart- ' meat, being a statutory Customs holiday. With the exception of the Government offices, Friday next (the King's ■birthday) will be observed as a public holiday' in Nelson. For banks, factories, and tradesmen working under awards the King's birthday is*"a statutory holiday, and must be observed, consequently the retailers have decided to fall into line. Under the awards the Prince of Wales' birthday (June 23rd) is also a statutory holiday, but as it is improbable that the heir apparent will be created Prince of Wales before thafc date, the holiday will not be required to bo kept as long as the title remains in abeyance. All parades of Territorials called for Friday next have been cancelled^ The principal holiday attractions on tlio King's birthday arc tho seven-a-side football tournament and the farmers' field day at Briglitwater.
