ATTACK ON A WOMAN.
HER ASSAILANT IDENTIFIED. [United Press Association.] Auckland, May 28. A respectable middle-aged woman from the Bay. of Plenty, at preseivton a visit. to her" parents, was returning from town between 6.30 and 7 last evening, and as sho. passed the Sur premo Court ground, within 100 yards of her parents' residence, she was approached by a man who threw her violently to the ground. A struggle ensued, but tho woman managed to free herself. In her flight. she met a girl, who stood by her, and helped her to attract the attentionfpf two men who were passing at the end of tho road. The latter immediately' closed with tho man .indicated to them as the assailant, aud held him until a constable was summoned. Other passers by also assisted the_ woman, who, was in a very distressed state, tq her parents' house. Shft was very seriously bruised about the body, with an abrasion on. the forehead, and her clothes were torn, Thp man arrested gave the -name of Aloxander McMas-. ters. He is a tall, well built, n-ell dressed young man ; of about 24 years of age. ■'■' ■'_ '■' " ■ - Later. The woman has given- a clear account of tjio assault; She says she was returning from a church bazaar, whan she was accosted by a man, who rushed at her and knocked 'her .down... Then a struggle ensued. Her assailant was a powerful man, and she made a vigorous defence j- which lasted about twenty minutes. Subsequently she identified McMasters as the man who assaulted her. Ho was brought before the Court, and was charged with assault with intent to. commit rape, and he was remanded. •'■■
