PAWELKA'S TRIAL.
[United Press Association.] Palmerston North, May 26. The trial of Joseph Pawclka, charged with the murder of Sergeant Maguire, was continued in the Suprcino Court to-day. S. J. Tisdall, gunsmith, Wellington, described the revolver taken from Pawelka, and also that used by Detactive Quartermain. Evidenco showed that the bullet taken, from Sergeant Mflguicc's'bo'dy was from a 5J2---calibro L.C.I' 1 . Colt cartridge, which was of the same kind as the ammunition found in Pawelka's 6-chambercd revolver. Another bullet produced was from a .320 English cartridge*, ] and corresponded with Detective | Quartermain's cartridge. It was of j tho same calibre as tho.ono found in; Sergeant Maguire's body, but of an j entirely different type. ■ I When Constable* Gallagher gave' evidence as to the words spoken by j Pawelka after his capture, the accus-! cd's face worked, and he became intensely white as ho rosct to his feet. mid ca))ed out, "Your Honour, that is a )ie." He was pullet) to his seat, ! and ho remained quiet during the rest of the proceedings. A difficulty' arose* as to the relative weights of the bullets in Pawelka's and Detective Quartormain's revolvers. The Court adjourned at four o'colck in order to allow a thorough test of the. weights of the biillets to be made. The hearing of tho defence will commence to-morrow. It is understood that a considerable amount of evidence will be brought forward for the defence.
