Mr'E. E. Low (a' son of the late Mr J. P. Low, of Nelson), who is third, engineer of the Mararoa, has passed the examination for a chiet engineer's certificate. Mr Low is at present on a holiday visit to t Nelson. Mr James Cowan, until recently journalist attached to the Tourist Department, has been appointed subeditor of the "Free Lance," vice Mr Glanvillci Hicks, who is to edit and manage the "Rotonia Times." Mr Richard Carter, Secretary for Customs, retired yesterday (says the Wellington "Times" of Wednesday), and was presented by the staff with a silver 'caitree dish, silver fish slice, broad fork, salt spoons, dessert spoons and forks, and a Remington typewriter, tho latter being included because it is Mr CarterJ s intention to go iilto business. ■ Mrs Mary Teresa ftu Moulin, relict of the late. Mr J. P. Dv Moulin, one of Auckland's pioneer settlers, passed away on Saturday in her eighty-fourth year. Mr Lever is a native of, South Australia, but at present he is in Eng- ! land. j Mr and Mrs H. R. Duncan, of Nelson, leave for the Old Country via Suva and Vancouver by the Marama ' next month. ' - Mr E. J. Pratt, who was formerly with Messrs Sargood, Son, and ■Ewen, Ltd., is leaving Nelson to-morrow for Fiji, to tako up a position there. Mr Pratt is a native of .Nelson; and with the exception; of several years spent in the North Island, has resided here all his life.
