Wilkes raid the road was open, at least tor •driving cattle round. After some discussion, it was resolved that the Council inspect this piece of road to see it am-thing can be done. The secretary of the Ivia Ora Hockey Club wrote requesting on behalf of the club, permission to make. a charge for admission to the Recreation Ground on the 28th inst when a dress tournament is. to< bo held.-— Io be informed til at the Council e'a,niidt allow a charge for. admission; to the grounds to be made, seeing it is a public domain to which the public have right ot entry ; but that there is no ob]ection to the Hockey Club taking up a collection on the ground:. The secretary of the Institute wrote setting foi-th that the Government having withdrawn the usual subsidy to libraries the Institute was badly m need of funds, and requesting tho Council to favourably . consider the question of .making a grant in aid. Aitcr some discussion Cr. Bell moved that the Council assist -the Institute to the extent of £3, this was seconded by Cr. Coleman, and the voting being equal the Mayor gave his casting vote with the noes. Further correspondence ana tlata were received re street lighting with acetylene, from F-. J. Shelton, ami W. H Davies and Co., and from H. Mc\rtney to make street lamps vt Muntz metal.— Received and consideration deferred; . . . „ , The audited balance sheet for the year ending March 31st, 1910 ( WjOrvasnre ending March 31st, 1910, was adopted and duly signed by the Mayor. Several matters requiring attention and repairs on the roads were considered and referred to the Works Committee. It was resolved that a remit bo sent ta the Municipal Conference in favour of reverting to the old system of voting at local elections. The Town Clerk was instructed in future to pay the ■Fire Brigade subsidy in the .month or March. . . c Gr. Coleman moved the motion or which lie had givon notice, re raising a loan for certain purposes, which was seconded by Cr. Wilkes. On looking into the matter it was . found that there were some le.^nl difficulties in the way of carrying out the intentions cf Cr."
