NELSON HARMONIC SOCIETY.

SPOHR'S "LAST JUDGMENT."

(From "Tlie Colonist," April: 29.)

'... The work chosen by the Nelson -..Harmonic Society for production at the School of Music last evening w.as Spohr's "Last Judgment," and there was a largo audience. Taken on the . wliole the performance was a successful one, although some of the numbers were weak. Thu benches were only fairly well filled, and the male singers were few- in number, but tho volume of sound, especially with the basses, was surprisingly strong. Ifc is to be regretted that the Society is so weak in tenors. Tiie orchestra' was strong in numbers, but the instruments were not altogether in tpue, and at times they predominated. TJie _ soprano solos were taken by Miss Vera Bamford, who" was iv excellent voice, 'and she acquitted herself with credit. Her best .numbers- were "These, who have passed with heavj* tribulation," "I saw a new Heaven," and '. 'The Lamb." Miss Ena Rowe , sang the contralto parts iv. the quartettes. Tho tenor scT.os wore taken by Mr. E. Itiehards, and his most successful efforts were the recitative "Aud lo!, a throne. was set to H e aven," and. the solos "And 10, a mighty host," and "Blest are the departed." The duet with Mr. A. G. Thompson, who took the bass soles, "Forsake me not in this dread hour" was one of the best iteriis of the evening. Mr. Thompson was very successful, and his fine voice was heard te advantage in the solos and concerted numbers. - The long recitative "The' Day of wrath is done" was very well done, as were the solos "Thus saith the Lord," "Fear them riot," and '.'I Know Thy works." Tlie quartettes "Yes, every tear" and "0 Lord who shall not fear thee,'" were exceedingly well rendered. Of the choruses "Praise His awful Name," "Great and wonder-: ful are all Thy wtrks," were well done, and the finale "Thine is the Kingdom" .which was the best of the evening. Herr Lemmer conducted the perforniaiico with his usual ability, and Miss Judsou was pianiste, and Mrs. Rich; mond Fell was leader of the orcliestra.

The next work to bo undertaken by the Society *wiH' : 'he Mendelssohn's "Walpurgis Night." ' *
