He s"tates thatthe Newcastle strike, had a very uridersirable effect on Australian trade in the East, and many Eastern coal importers had transferred their business to other countries. It would be a long time before the prejudicial effects of the strike were removed. Nevertheless, there was a growing improvement'in general trade •with The rubber boom, was .causing 'the planting of rubber to be pushed ahaad. with feverish activity in the Malay States, Java, Borneo, and elsewhere in. the tropics. Many millions of foreign money was invested.. . .
