THE NEWCASTLE MINERS.

WAGES BOARD'S AWARD,

STRIKE OF TIMBER STACKERS.

Sydney, April 13. The Miners' Wages Board's award for" the Stockton and Borehole mines fixes the price for clearing and filling the* coal behind screens at lOd a ton, and makes the working time underground eight hours, exclusive of half an hour for "crib."

•The award lias caused great disappointment amongst the miners, as they claimed a rate of 2s 7d a ton, and eight hours from bank to bank. Thej opinion is expressed amongßt miners that the Borehole men will not work under the award, and that t will mean trouble at other pits. , Members of the Miners' Federation, interviewed, said they had thought that they might get something which would make 'them view ther Wages Board in a favourable light, but this settled it. . .

The timber stackers' strike continues. ' A considerable, number of free labourers have been put on, working under police protection.
