Mr Kenneth Sisam, who has been selected as tha Rhodes Scholar for 1910, has (says an Auckland telegram) been appointed assistant professor in English at the Auckland University College for the next term. A Press Association cable from Suva states that Mr David Solomon ■ has been elected Warden of Levuka. Captain Guy R. A. Gaunt, R.N., it is notified in the "London Gazette," has been appointed to command H.M.S. Challenger, one of the larger cruisers now on the Australian station, to date 15th February. He was promoted to Post Captain in 1907, and in ordinary circumstances may expect to attain flag rank in some ten years from that date, which should be reached by Captain E. Gaunt about the end of 1912, and he will be the first Australian born admiral. Miss Mary A. Grant, head mistress of "West Christchurch District High School, who was well known in education circles throughout New, Zealand, has died at Waimate. Mr D. L. Lusford ; of the Agricultural Department, died at Napier on Friday, aged forty-two years. "The deceased, who was a son of the late Mr William Luxford, of Wellington, was for. som"e time engaged in journalism in Nelson. He then joined the Veterinary Department, under Mr J. A. Gilruth, as correspondence clerk, in the Government laboratory. On the reorganisation of the Department Mr Luxford was transferred to Napier as district agent. The news of his death was received with much regret by his numerous friends. Messrs A. N. Batchelc-r (1.P.G.M.) and A. G. Shrimpton.Prov. Secretary, will leave Nelson on Thursday to attend the biennial meeting of the moveable committee of the M.TJ. 1.0.0. F., which opens at Napier on Saturday next. Mr \V. McF. McjLeod, an old and respected resident of Opunake, died last week, aged 74 years. He was the last survivor of the historical Dr Livingstone expedition. Prior to joining Dr Livingstone's expedition he served for the space of three jears as an engineer on H.M.S. Lyra, a boat employed in the slave trade suppression.
