NEWS OF THE DAY.

m The Argylo water race at Charleston has been leased to the representative of a Melbourne syndicate which proposes to work the cement gold bearing leads at Charleston by the cyanide process, options having been, taken over several claims. Many years ago the late Judge Broad endeavoured to get Melbourne capitalists to work these cement leads. The alleged libel action, Bertling v. John Norton, proprietor of the "New Zealand Truth," a claim for £2000, was continued yesterday, and was not concluded when the Court rose (says a Press Association telegram). The Canvastown correspondent of the- "Express" states the Golden Bar reef has again made a start. This time there seems to be enough money behind the syndicate to give the reef a fair trial, and this is what is wanted. The Chriistchurch "Press" .states that John Whelam, who disappeared in a mysterious fashion from Banks Peninsula in January, and who, it was supposed had fallen over the cliffs into sea, has turned up at Timaru, where he has relatives. When asked where he had been he eaid that the first he had known of being lost was the ap- . pearance in the newspapers of statei ments concerning his disappearance. We append a portion ' of a poem sent to him: — 1 Such love as his, what tongue can i"* fitly tell! 1 Save he whose heart haß owned its i magic spell; __ | With, heaving breast, bat hope as firm as rock, • He breathed that name, th' inspiring name of "Lock." . j Straightway to Lock's with little cash, 'tis true, ! They're married now, and prattlers 1 round them throng, As happy in their home as summer day is long; ■ Yet oft in loving circle they tell that little flock, ' How grateful Btill they feel to good old William Look, 1 ' The Complete Furnisher.
