NELSON TROTTING CLUB'S RACES.

(From "The Colonist," Feb. 10-) Glorious weather prevailed for tho annual race meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club, which took place at Richmond Park yesterday, and therewas -a large attendance of tho public, including many ladies. Six bookmakers were licensed and £1537 was put through tho totalisator, against £1513 last year. The fields were large, and with one exception two dividends were paid on each race. Sir John's win in the Waimea Handicap was the surprise of the meeting, and he returned his few supporters a handsome dividend. The stewards were caLed together twice, but their duties were not arduous, and everything passed oir smoothly under the guidance of the Club's capable secretary, Mr John Glen. The Garrison Band was present and rendered a number of selections, and the totalisator was worked by Mr F. N. Jones to the entire satisfaction of the public. The afternoon tea provided by Messrs Henry and Co. was much appreciated by the public. Appended are the results :— Pioneer Trot, of 25 soys ; second horse 5 soys from the stake. JTor all horses that have not won or been placed iv better time than 3 minutes to tho mile. One and a half miles. 1. A Fleming's b.m Woodburn Lass 5 years (owner) 7 sees 1 4. Miss Molly and Gard kept together for the first mile, with Rona Bay third, Woodburn Lass settling down after tho first mile, soon overhauled the leaders* passing Gard at the sea and winning with car.c. Rona Bay while going strong for third place broke, and Doyle beat her on the post ; time 4.34, Waimea Handicap, of 30 soys ; second horse 5 soys from the stake. For trotters only. All horses handicapped to trot 4,30 or better. One and a half miles, 7. W. Bevan's bg Sir John, aged (S. Gallacher) 28secs 1 2. A, Emm's br g King Teddy, aged N. Emms) 28secs 2 j 1. J. Beach Yaw trotting steadily overhauled Lady Dickens and when opposite" the stand Hadee was third. At the sea Beach Yaw and Hadee displaced Lady Dickons. Sir John, who was coming fast, overtook the leaders, and won by two lengths. Kin" Teddy passed Hadee and Lady Dickens, gaining second place amidst applause. Lady Dickens was fourth and Hadee fifth. The owner of King Teddy entered a protest against Sir John for crossing at the start. The stewards met and dismissed the protest, the statement as to crossing out not being substantiated ; , time, SM. Rona Bay soon ran to the front and was never headed, winning with the greatest of ease. Lady Dickens and Offchance cut down the rest of the field and filled second and third place respectively, about a chain between each ; time 6.3. Nelson Trotting Club's Handicap, of 50 soys. There was a good race between Lady Bella, Stella Leigh and Miss Olive. The last named, who was leading for second place, died away in the straight, and Lady Bella beat Stella Leigh for "the position by a length. Miss Olive was fourth. Monitor trotted a third of the distance. The rider of Stella Leigh was . cautioned for beating the starter; time 5.37. Brightwater Handicap, of 30 soys; seteond horse 5 soys from stakes. Beach Yaw overhauled Nada K at the first half mile, but tho former breaking, Nada K went to the front and was never headed. Hadee caught up "to Beach Yaw and a great race down the straight ensued, Hadee getting second place by half a length. Picaroon while coming vefv fast broke badly several times, and only ran into fourth place-; time 4.18 2-5. Richmond Handicap* of 25 soys; second horse 5 soys from the stake. St Joe trotting steadily overtook Offchance at the back of the course in the second round, and looked as though he would catch Woodburn Lass, but broke- on entering the straight. Welcome Mary overtook Offchance and ran into third placo; time 5.52 2-5. Dash Handicap, of 20 soys; second horse 3 soys from the stake. _ All horses handicapped to do 3 minutes or better. ■-. 1. W. Lady Bella soon passed Arthur's Mistake, Companion, and Miss Olive, and led to the finish, winning easily. Hadee ran into second place at the sea, and King Teddy finished third in front of Companion. The ballot by the ladies attending the Nelson Trotting Club's races at Richmond Park on Wednesday for tho best dressed rider or driver engaged at the meeting resulted in Mr. J. F. Hardey gaming the verdict. Mr. C. Fieldes and Mr. R. Win tied for second place. About two hundred ladies recorded their votes, which, were distributed among twenty-five riders and drivers. The prize was one guinea, offered by Mr. F. N. Jones. The following were the amounts won by the successful owners : — H. Bevan-, £49 ; IJ. E. Griffiths, £45; Fleming £40 ; |J. Geange £25; Mrs C. H. Ruffell (bracelet value £15 15s) £20 15s ; 11. Win, £8 ; J. P. O'Connor £5 ; A. Emms £5; J. F. Hardey £5; C. J. Ruffell £3; Total £205 15s. A meeting of tho commivfcee- of the Xolsou Trotting Club was held _ at .Mercer's rooms on Saturday evening. Tho president (Mr H. Baigent) occupied the chair, and there were present, xMessrs J. F. Hardey, E. E. Trask, C. J. Hardcy, J. H. Finnev, C. R. Harley, C. J. ltuffell, and G.* Silcock. The secretary (Mr J. Glen) prqsented the balance-sheet for the recent race mooting, which showed that a small profit had berai, made. On the year's transactions the' club should make about £70. Reference was made to the excellent work dona by tho secretary (especially in collecting nominations and acceptances).The president handed Mr J. F. Hardey Mv F. N. Jones' special prize for the best dressed rider at the recent race meeting, which was decided; by the ladies by ballot. In expressing his thanks Mr Hardoy suggested that the club should oficjr a prize on the lines adopted by Mr Jones, pointing out that it would encourage horsemen to appear in- proper costume. The president spoke of the success of the last raco meeting, and said tho club should continue to strive to please tho pilblic. It had been suggested to him that the club should run a two days' meeting, and he asked members to think tho matter over as it would be brought up at the annual meeting. Correspondence was dealt with and the meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
