NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Wellington-Brindisi despatch ' of mails of the 14th January arrived in London on the afternoon of tho 18th instant. At the Magistrate's Court j'esterday morning, All Wing, who was arrested at Stoke on Saturday evening, was brought before Mr J. S. Evans, S.M., on a charge of having opium in iiis possession, and remanded until Friday next, when he will be brought up;with two other Chinamen charged with similar offences. The practice for the orchestra in connection with the Nelson Harmonic Society will be held to-morrow evening. An Auckland telegram of February 18th states that a young man, who gave the name of Sydney Stevenson, has been arrested on a charge of obtaining money by. the sale of mining shares which he did not possess. Representing himself to be John Bur- : ridge, of Nelson, he sold to S. White and Co. 500 May Queen share's, and received £112 9s in cash. Representing himself as H. R. Duncan, of Nelson, he sold through Messrs Mowbray 1000 Watchman shares. He asked for a cash payment of £89 6s 4a, but the brokers insisted on paying by cheque, and, suspicion being aroused, payment was stopped. When arrested, accused had £GQ in his possession. In Court his solicitor stated he would plead guilty, and restitution would he made of the money received by accused. Prisoner was remanded, bail being fixed at two sureties of £50 each. Attention is drawn to Mrs Anstice's new advertisement on the second page of this issne re linen goods. This day at 1.30 p.m., on the premises, Hardy street, Mr W. Lock -will sell the stock of mercery, clothing, etc., belonging to Mr J. Bennett. To-morrow, at 2 p.m., Mr A. Gould will sell furniture and effects on behalf.'of Mrs Red worth, at tlie residence, Warwick "House ; on Thursday, at 2.30 p.m., furniture and effects, at the rooms, Bridge street. Messrs Bisley Bros, and Co. announce the following sales : — To-mor-row, salo of hides, -skins, and tallow ; on Friday next, annual ram fair and stock sale at Richmond ; Saturday •next, coach, horses, and plant, on ac- j count of Mr Sutherland, Blenheim. The children's department at Mrs Anstice's is. one of the busiest in the Store, and the washing hats, dresses, and over-alls now shown here for little girls are particularly interesting to every mother.
