NELSON HARBOUR.
There is evidently a deske on the ; : )art of st y n\e people to damage the port j jf Nelson, as tho following paragraph i in Tut./lay's "New Zealand Times" j will show: — "Recently a Press Association message was issued from Nelson explaining that a statement published in Wellington that the Pateena had to wait for a greater depth of water before entering Nelson was incorrect, and another reason was circulated for the delay, to the vessel. The officers of the Mapourika state that that vessel had to wait from 1.30 a.m. td 7 a.m. last Saturday before she was taken into port by the pilot at Nelson. The vessel was drawing 14ft. 3in. of water, and as. it was km water at Nelson during the period of delay there, is an impression that there was not sufficient depth for the Mapourika. The; shallowest position is believed to bo at the beginning of the 'cut.' " When this was ( brought under the notice of Captain Collins, the Harbourmaster, yesterday, he said that there was ample water to. have brought the Mapourika into port .on her arrival here on Saturday last, but as there was no advantage to be gained by berthing her in the middle of the nkht, she remained outside until early morning. Moreover, - Captain Collins pointed out that it was dead low water about the time the Mapourika was brought in, high water dn Saturday mornlflg' being at 11.47 .•
