WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
[United Pkesb Association.] Invercargill, Feb. 11. At the Women's Christian Temperance Union Convention to-day the financial .report showed receipts £332 12s 6d, expenditure £'2io 9s 7d, leaving a credit balance of £87 2s lid. A sum of £2002 lids had passed through the local treasury during the year, leaving a total balance of £o!5 6s Bd, each union showing a credit balance. A vote of thanks was accorded to Miss . McCombs, the- New Zealand treasurer. ' The report of the unfermented wine department, supplied by Mrs Gaskin, of Greymonth, showed that the Nonconformist churches with verj few exceptions used unfermented wine at the Communion, as did also a few Anglican churches. The report of Miss Powell, the Dominion organiser, showed that since beginning work in July sho had travelled 4267 miles, and had visited 41 different localities in the interest of the work. The organiser was re-ap-pointed. 1 The reports on press work and Bible iii the schools were read, and adopted, a discussion taking place on the Nelson system in regard to tli€ latter subject. The purity .report was presented by Mrs Webb of Ormandville. Much literature had been circulated and addresses given to girls and' women. One union had formed a vigilance committee, rescuing a number of children from immoral,, surroundings and taking charge, of them. Girls had alsc been rescued from houses of immoral, ity, and placed in respectable situations
