The wheat crop of Australia for 1909-10 is officially estimated at 82,000,000 bushels,' of which 52,000,000 are available for export. The value of this .wheat at seaboard is £10,500,000. The new Royal Dutch Packet liner Van der Hagen, whioh arrived at Melbourne recently, has what is described as the newest thing in lifeboats, the "basketrboat/' which ib an interesting part of the vessel's lifesaving equipment. It was christened the "basket-boat" by its inventor. It is absolutely unsinkable, and will right itself from any position The outside casing is made of ordinary cane wickerwork. Then .comes a layer of large pieces of cork f and finally, inside all, is a wooden lining. With forty people in the boat, however, the floor of the wooden lining never reaches the level of the sea outside, and any water coming aboard simply runs out again through the wood, leaving the boat dry. There are patent davits to -launch it by, which swing it over the side, and let it drop anyhow. The boat righting itself, this does not matter. There is also no chance of it being smashed against the side of the vessel, as the wickerwork and cork have such a large amount of spring in them.
