THE COAL STRIKE.

SOUTH WALES DISPUTES

CLAIM AGAINST MINERS

A GRAVE SITUATION

[ Press Association — Copyright.]

London, Feb. 2. The South Wales mine owners claim damages from the men for breach of contract by refusing to work the extra 60 Jiours under the Eight Hours Law, aggregating £300,000. The colliers have retaliated by claiming payment for short coal for which the existing agreement does not enforce payment. The Northumberland miners continue fiercely to oppose three shifts. It is expected that the Northumberland ballot next week will order a strike.

Mr. Burt report 3 that the situation is grave, and that there is great risk of a general strike, which is deprecated.
