Before the sittings of the Supreme Court coinmenccd yesterday morning. Mr C. Y. Fell (\Jrown Prosecutor), oi behalf of the Bar, made reference te the death,, of Mr W. H. Barnicoat. barrister and solicitor, which occurred unexpectedly at Wangalllli oil Hatlll" dav night. There were present, Mr. J.S. Evans S.M., Messrs J. P. lUye' fKingdon, Glasgow and Hayes), H. V. Gully (Adams and Harlcy.) E. B. Moore (Pitt and Moore), J. Houlker. ■{Maginnity and Son), M. Myers /of Wellington), and Hutton (of Yvanganui). Mr. Fell said that he desired to pub Jicly express the sense of the '.oss t l -< profession had sustained in the d"\iti of Mr W. H. Barnicoat. Deceased, 1h said, was one of his oldest friends, and one of the most respected. Ho joiuec" his firm as an articled clerk many years ago, and showed marked abiljn in his profession. Since leaving Nelson Mr. Fell said that he had seer, little of Mr. Baniiccrat, but had heard much, regarding his late friend's abil ity. Mr. Barnicoat was a man who had sustained lo the 'utmost the high traditions of the profession to which he belonged, and he had earned the respect of everyone. His reputation in, Wellington and Wanganui stood high, as high, Mr. Fell said, as any man ii the Dominion, and in his death tin T^minion had sustained a severe loss. ' . ' _ . •

At the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Permanent Building Society held last evening, Mr 11. V. Gully (chairman) referred to the fact that the Board had lost one of the oldest of its members iv the person of the lato Mi - Philip Tcpliss, who had done useful service as ia director. The Hon F. Tra.sk proposed awl Mr Henry Baigent seconded that U. minute be lerordod approciatiro of tho ssniccs rendered to the Society by the late Mr Topliss, and that a letter of sympathy lie forwarded to his widow. Tlie motion was carried unanimously.

Miss Bcata (as she was commonly called) had mauv friends in Nelson", to whom she was known as one who bore her sufferings with ma.rve'lous "" resignation. The bereaved parents and family will have tlie sympathy of a host of rrionda in Nelson aud the country districts.
