SECOND DAY'S SITTING.

The second day's sitting of the Nelsoi Education Board was had yesterday. Present: Messrs W. N. Franklyn (in the chair), F. W. 0. Smith, Bc.uke Thos- Baigent, Munson, Fair ana L °Tho chairman (Mr. AT. Maginnity) was engaged in the bupreme Court and could not be present. It "was resolved on tho application of Mr Baigent, to grant the services ot Mr. James Bruce, instructor m agriculture,' on the day of the Golden Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Show to explain the nature of the exhibits comprised in the collection of grasses etc, lent by the Agricultural Department. An application was received tor the establishment of a school at Glen riope (beyond the Tadmor saddle), it being suggested that a tent could be used until a mor* permanent structure COllld be provided. It wa S> stated that tWCiUty Children were running wildThe' Secretary -said that a portable school had been .erected at Mami and as the railway. Workmen were shitting about it would be well to consult the Public Works Department as to probable movements.— lt was resolved to consult the Resident Engineer on the matter. , n , , .., Deviations from schedule holidays wore granted as follows:— . barau (Moutere), two weeks at Christmas, fire weeks at hop-picking.and one week mid-winter ; Wai-iti two weeks Christinas, five weeks hop-picking; Kiwi, five weeks Christmas, four weeks hoppicking; Takaka, two weeks Christmas, four weeks hop-picking, and one week mid-winter ; Orinoco from 1/ th December to 24th January, the balance, as hop-picking holidays -to be decided at the February meeting. Further consideration of the matter of a miniature rifle range for the Boys' Central School was held oyer till next meeting te give opportunity of ascertaining whether the City Council had any objection to the range as planned being placed in the school grounds. Consideration was given a letter of explanation from the Ncudorf school teacher regarding the. complaint of Mr Ducker that his son, who had passed the sixth standard was being worked in a lower class. The boy it was explained had obtained the "compctenev" certificate, only and the Inspector said that the teacher had power to classify such scholars.— lt was resolved to inform Mr. Ducker of the farts. Messrs. Rouse, Baldwin, and Colquhoun waited upon the Board as a deputation from Sherry residents with respect to an endeavour which is being made to retain the old school building as a place of worship and for social purposes. An offer of £10 and pepper corn rental was offered for a twenty-one years lease. It was claimed that at least fifty per cent of the cost of the building was contributed by the settlers while, the land was given by tho late Mr. Phillips senr.—lt was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Beuke, that the offer of £10 be accepted, and that a lease of the site be granted for 14 years. at os yearly, a proviso to be inserted that the building was not to bo used for school purposes. _ An application was received Irom tho Seddonville Committee for permission to erect a miniature rifle range. — It was resolved that permission he. granted subject to the range being passed by a responsible officer. . . The secretary's action in dealing with correspondence, from Cape Foulwind was approved. Appointments of teachers wore approved as follows : — Miss Dennehy, assistant, Motupiko ; Miss Wooilctt, solo teacher, Happy Valley; Miss Doyle, sole, teacher, Fairdown. Tlie resignations of Miss Woollctt, Korero, and Mr. Forsyth, household school Stanley Brook, were accepted. Permission was given the Inspectors to publish the scholarship iesults when they are received. The East Takaka Committee was granted £6 for improvements to school buildings. An application from the Westport Committee for additional desks,, and suggesting that a trial of single desks be made, was referred to the Inspector. A grant of 37s was made for conveniences at Westport.

It was resolved that the matter in connection with the Merrijigs school be referred to the Board's architect.

An application was received irom Longford for the erection of a new school building, the present one being too small and altogether unsuitable. It was stated that the building was formerly a roadman's cottage. It was explained that the Board had no power to erect a new building, as the school was within three miles of Murchison, and it was resolved that a suggestion be made to the Committee for the conveyance of the children to the latter place. The Rev. Mr. Sampson, Westport, wrote in regard te holiday services at the Waimangaroa school, and it was resolved that the letter be referred to the Waimangaroa Committee. The acting-Chairman said that as this was the last meeting of the year, ho wished to move a hearty vote of thanks to the , Board's officers and staff for their services, and ho spoke highly of their efficiency. Messrs. Lock, Beuke, and Fair added their tributes, and tho motion was carried unanimously. Senior bispector Harknes's replied, and wished the members the compliments of the season.

A vote of thanks to the press was unanimously carried, and the meeting adjourned.
