HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE MESSAGE.

The Commerce and Tourists Division has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London October 23rd :— The mutton and lamb market is quieter, and prices are slightly easier. There is less demand for retail. Scotch and Dutch supplies are heavy. The beef market is steady, and there is a better demand. The average price to-day for New Zealand beef is 3j}d per lb for hindquarters, and 3d per lb for forequarters. The butter market is very firm for best quality. The supply falls short of demand, and buyers are anxiously waiting colonial shipments. The price of choicest New Zealand to-day is 119s per cwt, Australian 117s, Danish 132g, and Siberian 107s. The cheese market is quiet, with no alteration in prices. New Zealand' cheese, 57s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet but steady. New Zealand good fair grade, on spot, per ton £27 15s ; fair grade, on spot, per ton £26 15s ; fair current Manila, £27. October-December shipments, New Zealand good fair grade £27 10s ; New Zealand fair grade £26 10s; Manila fair current £26 10s; Manila, output 22,000 bales. The wheat market is firmer.
