SOLAR OBSERVATORY FOR AUSTRALIA.

(Received Oct 28, 0.55 a.m.) Meibourns, Oct 27. Xord Dudley presided at an influential meeting to advocate the establishment of a solar observatory. In urg- . ing the importance of the proposal he said one of the main reasons in favour "of the observatory ivas the geological position of Australia which was most suitably situated to fill the gap in the chain of observations round the earth. The proper conduct of solar research depended upon continuous observations throughout the 24 hours. The estimated initial cost is £10,000 . and the annual cost of upkeep £1500. It was resolved that the establishment of a solar observatory is desirable and that the Federal Government be strongly urged to assume the responsibility of carrying the proposal into effect.
