STOKE.
A second concert in aid of the Stoke Public Hall enlargement fund was hold on October 20th, when the accommodation of the building was again taxed to its utmost. The concert opened with a pianoforte duet by Mrs .and Mr. T. Scott, the second part of the programme was also opened by them, both items being well rendered and much appreciated. Mr. A. P. Allport sang "By the Fountain" in his usual good stylo and later in the evening sang a durt with .Mr. Scott which was well sung. Mrs. Toms was heard to great advantage in "The. Toilers" and iii response to an encore sang "Somewhere," she was even more successful later in ihe evening whan she sang "Slumber Sea." Mr. G. Steu'art again, scored a success, his .recitation being Buzz Fuzz's address to the Jury for which he received a decided encore, on the second part he was vociferously oncored and had to respond twice". Mrs Wood sang a litle song beautifully aiyj as an encore number sang "Absent" a^ sweet little song o f Metealf's. Mr. V. Dee's violin solo was much appiociated ,his encore number Gonoad'.<: Serenade being particularly good. A special feature of the evening was the • singing of Mr. Thompson, his well trained bass voice being heard to great advantage in "The Yeoman's Wedding" and later in the evening "You'd better ask me" (Hermann Ijohn), both items boing encored. A humorous note was struck by Mr. Joluiston who rendered a comic item and in response to an encore gave a series of local hits, causing much merriment. Mr. G. Mill was very successful in "She waits by the Deep blue Sea." Mr. Barry's fine tenor voic? was heard to great advantage in "On the road to Cingalee," he was followed by Mr. Wilmot, who pleated the audience with "The Deathless Army" his encore number being Somusets "Across the Blue Sea." Prior to this item Mr. Alfred Allport thanked the performers for their kind assistance aud also the audience, he explained the financial position of the hall, and announced that a subscription list would be opened and hoped that the additions to the building would be complete this summer. The accompanists during the eveninig were Mesdanics Andrew, Scott, Misses Barry and Bead), and Mr. Scott. On TliUKilny evening a most enjoyable dance was held at tho Hall, tho occasion being the break up of Mr. E. Best's assemblies which have been held during the winter. A very happy time was spent by all present. Mifis Beach officiated at the piano in her usual first-class style.
