The Clifton colliery has been idle for some timo owing to the miners refusing to work while two men who reiused to pay fines inflicted upon tnem by the Miners' Union for alleged broaches of the rides, were retained. Summonses have been issued against 187 of the employees on a chargo of absenting themselves from employment without leave. j The first ease opened to-day and was adjourned. Counsel for the de- | fence stated, "We have exhausted all hope of a settlement, and it must now be a light to a finish." It is reported that the strikers are relying upon promises of financial support from other colliery districts, and that wider complications are not improbable.
